Abstract
Schaefer and Moos developed a model describing the relative contribution ofenvironmental resources, individual resources, event related factors, impact of eventand coping on significant life events. In the present study, the theoretical model was modified to examine factors associated with depression in a sample of patients sufferingdiabetes mellitus. Structural equation model revealed that both individual (self-esteemand self-efficacy) and environmental resources (social support received from family, friends and significant others) had indirect effects on depressive symptoms throughthe effect of event-related factors (perceived prognosis and perceived threat), impactof event (rumination, avoidance and hypervigilance) and coping (planful problemfocused, seeking social support, escape-avoidance, accepting responsibility, refuge infate and refuge in supernatural forces). Results are discussed in the frame of currentliterature. This research was supported by grant from The Scientific and Technological ResearchCouncil of Turkey (TUBITAK-SOBAG-109K528)
